Birdman: Audiovisual techniques

Birdman employs many audio-visual techniques to propel the narrative and explore the central theme of existentiality. The majority of scenes I shall focus on occur between 1:35:10 and 1:43:54, the final stages of the film. To explain the audio-visual relationships I draw upon key concepts as described by Michel Chion in his book Audio – Vision: sound on screen. Birdman, directed by Alejandro Inarritu, has an audacious score as improvised drums, played by Antonio Sanchez, span nearly its entirety, with only a few moments of harmonic relief provided by classical and jazz compositions as counter-balance.
